Justin Obney – Learning Through Doing

Yeah I know.. I am a ghost

Yeah so I know that I have not really been posting things for a while now. But as you know.. life happens some times. So just a quick note about what is going on in my life. I am still working with MMR Group doing custom web applications built on the .Net Framework. I have also since taken on setting up web presences for other on the side. Sometimes this is a complete build or it could just be some WordPress template customization. At work I have slowly been becoming the web 2.0 guy. As I have been really getting into learning and using Javascript, it has become my new favorite language. As you may know, I used to go give guest lectures at ITI to the web development students. Recently they had and opening to cover some classes for teachers with scheduling conflicts, so I was approached to go on staff.

So when you couple all this with the 3-4 nights a week I am serving with my awesome church, there isn’t much time left. However, I don’t think I would have it any other way. Life is going well right now. God is good.

Today I will be giving a lecture on using Master pages in an ASP.Net website. I will also be talking about the importance of separation of style and markup. Download the sample website

Stepping into new territory

I have come to the conclusion that I need to learn PHP and MySQL. At work we are on a Microsoft stack. And while I am comfortable with this and confident that neither technology is better than the other, I feel like knowing only the one is hindering my growth as a developer. Not to mention my ability to get on interesting projects that use the open source stack.

So over the next few months I will be taking on the task of learning PHP and MySQL. I am very excited as I am sure it will help me grow and also get better at customizing wordpress themes. Check back later to see how it is going.
